A
Absolute Link
Defines a specific location of the web file or document.
Adsense
A google program that offers websites the opportunity to make money through advertising on their website. You place a grouping of small text or banner ads throughout your site and when visitors click on the ad, Google pays the merchant the dollar amount associated with the ads.
Adwords
A Google program that allows websites to appear on the first search result pages for keywords. The merchant pays for each impression they receive from the first page placement.
AJAX
A group of inter-related web development techniques used for creating interactive web applications
Algorithm
A set of calculations used to solve a problem, a formula. In the context of computers, it is a step-by-step method of solving a problem, usually backed up by a mathematical proof.
Google uses an algorithm in order to run its search engine, they are often changing the calculations in order to offer a more efficient search engine, as well offer their web surfers the best results on the internet today.

Alt tags
A tag that is used as an alternative to describe an image on a website, this can be a key place to add keywords to your web page. When you are using the description of the alt tag, make sure you are describing the actual image on the site and not simply using it as a SEO tactic, that can be considered as black hat and can get you banned.
Anchor text
Otherwise known as the link label. This is the visible text that is clickable on the web page. This is a important aspect in Search Engine Optimization when you are doing your link development campaigns. When you are adding links on other websites be sure to include your keyword in your anchor text.
An example below if you own a bed and breakfast in vancouver:
<a href=”http://www.oceanbreezevancouver.com”>Vancouver Bed and Breakfast </a> - A description here which compliments your site.
The bolded area is the anchor text, this is important for Search Engines to understand what your site is about.

Back Links
The number of links pointing back to your site from other sites around the web.
Banned
Can happen to websites in a Search Engine or Directory if the website practices black hat SEO. Once you have been banned from a search engine, it can be very difficult to regain entry to that search engine. Be sure to read very carefully how not to fool the search engine and risk banning your site.
Black Hat SEO

Clickthrough
This is the action of clicking on a link and arriving on the website. Often a term associated with Pay Per Click.

Otherwise known as a spider or a robot.

Cascading style sheet, defines the styles of a website.

This defines a website which takes its information from a database. When you are choosing a database driven website there are some SEO elements you must think about before you choose a specific program. Make sure you are able to get search engine friendly URL's, easily name each page with its own title and that all the website content is readable to the search engines.
Deep Submitting
This is the technique of linking your internal pages to other websites on the web. This can be handy when you are looking to optimize for a multitude of terms. When you can link your inside page, you should make sure your anchor text is consistent with the key phrases for that internal page.
Directory
These are helpful websites that have a number of websites listed within it. Often you can find a number of directories for submission free around the web that is associated with your field of expertise. If you are to pay for inclusion make sure you are getting a quality link back to your site in return. Yahoo! Directory and All The Web are two outstanding paid directories that will get you the best ROI.
Doorway Page
These are web pages that are created for the sole purpose of tricking the user and the search engine. They will build a site fully optimized for one keyword, then with a use of meta refresh will automatically send you to a completely different site. This practice is definitely frowned upon in Search Engine Optimization.

Google Analytics
A free tool that google offers all webmasters to keep track of their hits on their website. Google analytics shows you a number of useful information such as your hits per day, keywords used to find your site and how much time a visitor is on your site.
Google Dance
This is a phrase used when Google is optimizing its algorithm. The search results will often change daily and websites will rise and fall in rankings and therefore are dancing.

Key Phrase
Same as above. Often a phrase consists of two or more words. Remember when you are using keywords often times "vancouver bed and breakfast" is a different then "bed and breakfast vancouver" make sure you include both in your website in order to show up for both.
Keyword Density
This describes the number of times a keyword is found on a website. The more time a keyword is found on a website the higher your keyword density will be.
Keyword Popularity
How popular a keyword is among the internet searchers. The more popular a keyword is the more traffic that can be potentially brought to your site if you have your site positioned at the top page of the Search Engines.
Keyword Stuffing
This describes the black hat practice of stuffing a number keywords into the codes alternate tags or meta tags. Often in the past you would find websites that added a number of keywords the same color of the background and just fill it with keywords.

Where the searcher lands when they click on a web advertisement or natural link listed in the search engine results.
Link Bait
A term used to describe information that will compel users to link to the website. It can be humorous or very informative. The more creative you become with your link bait the more natural links you can build and the higher you will be located in the search results.
